Walk into any stationery section and you will find journals at every price point. Some cost AED 15. Some cost AED 150. From the outside, the difference is not always obvious. So what are you actually paying for when you buy a handmade journal?
What machine-made means
Most journals sold in UAE supermarkets and online marketplaces are manufactured at scale. The cover is cut, pressed, and finished by machine. The notebook is bound mechanically. Quality control is statistical, not individual. This is not necessarily bad — mass production makes journals affordable and accessible — but the product reflects its process.
Machine-made journals are consistent because they are identical. Every unit is the same.
What handmade actually means
Handmade does not just mean assembled by a person. It means each journal passes through human hands at every meaningful stage — cutting, folding, pressing, finishing. Small variations exist because they are made one at a time, not because quality is lower. The opposite, in most cases.
When something is made by hand, the person making it can catch problems that a machine cannot. A misaligned edge, a cover that did not press cleanly — these get fixed before the journal leaves the workbench.
